Natural Treatments to Get Rid of Dandruff and Itchy Scalp

Dandruff is caused due to dry scalp or a skin condition known as seborrheic dermatitis. It also causes because of psoriasis, eczema or due to the overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus known as Malassezia. Some of the drugstore dandruff remedies include shampoos that include zinc pyrithione, which targets bacteria and fungus; coal tar and selenium sulfide, which reduces the growth of dead skin cells on the scalp, salicylic acid, which loosens flakes so that they can be washed away easily. Here are a few natural remedies to get rid of dandruff.

Aspirin

Aspirin has the same active ingredient, salicylic acid which is present in most of the medicated dandruff shampoos. How to use aspirin for dandruff? Take two aspirin and crush them to a fine powder. Add this powder to the shampoo and wash your hair with this mixture. Leave it on your hair for 1 to 2 minutes, then wash it with plain shampoo.

Tea tree oil

A study proved that shampoos with just 5 per cent tea tree oil vitally improve the severity of dandruff. Take your favourite shampoo and add a few drops of tea tree oil to it. Wash your hair with this. Applying this will not only help you get rid of dandruff but also give you beautiful hair.

Baking soda

There are certain things in your kitchen which you can include in your beauty regimen. In fact, you have a very useful thing in your kitchen that can help you get rid of dandruff. What is that? Baking soda. To use this ingredient, you must first wet your hair and then rub a handful of baking soda vigorously on the scalp. Skip the shampoo and rinse the right way. Using baking soda helps in reducing the overactive fungi that is one of the actual causes behind dandruff. You may experience dryness in your hair for a few weeks at first, but nothing to worry as your scalp will start generating natural oils, which in turn will make your hair soft and free from dandruff.

Apple cider vinegar

Applying cider vinegar is one of the popular remedies to get rid of dandruff. You need to blend a quarter cup of Apple Cider Vinegar and a quarter cup of water. Put this combination inside a spray bottle and spray on your scalp.  Cover your head with a towel and leave it for 15 minutes to 1 hour. Then, wash your hair as you do normally. Repeat this process two times a week.

Mouthwash

Many of you will be surprised to know that mouthwash can be used as a remedy for treating dandruff. To treat dandruff, wash your hair with your favourite shampoo and then rinse with a mouthwash. Make sure the mouthwash you use has alcohol content in it. Once done, end the process by applying a conditioner. The anti-fungal properties present in the mouthwash helps to prevent dandruff.

Olive Oil

Massage your scalp with olive oil and leave overnight. In the morning, wash with your regular shampoo. For a faster effect, search for a shampoo that has olive oil.
